Milford, Iowa – Iowa Lakeside Laboratory and Imagine Iowa Great Lakes today launched a new Public Art & Ecology Artist in Residence (AIR) program. The program will result in the creation of interactive, artistic experiences that allow residents and visitors to learn about the ecology and natural systems that comprise the Iowa Great Lakes region.
Each year, an artist will be selected for an extended residency where they will develop and execute a temporary public art project. Projects will be informed by the ecology, science, and natural history of the area. To accomplish this, the Public Art & Ecology AIR will run parallel to Lakeside Lab’s courses, research, and other artist residencies that occur during the summer months.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to broaden our programming and to facilitate the new AIR program. Given its longer duration, the program will afford the selected artist the ability to explore their chosen topic in greater depth,” said Iowa Lakeside Lab Artists-in-Residence program director Alex Braidwood. “This research phase will ensure the artist delivers a
project that speaks to our local region and enhances the natural environment.”
The new artist in residence program is expected to begin in the spring, with completion of the project anticipated in early August to coincide with the area’s peak tourism season.
“This partnership embodies the collaborative spirit we seek in all our work. The public art and ecology AIR will augment Lakeside Lab’s programming while furthering Imagine’s public art efforts,” said Michele Goodenow, Imagine Iowa Great Lakes executive director. “We are eager to launch this program and to select our first artist in residence.”

The mission of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Regents Resource Center (ILLRRC) is to provide facilities and programming as a field station and community resource to support scientific education, research, and outreach programs of the Regents universities and other institutions.
Imagine Iowa Great Lakes seeks to enhance Lake Okoboji for the residents and visitors of today and tomorrow. A privately funded initiative, Imagine creates a strategic vision to guide beautification and enhancement efforts in the Okoboji area. Imagine goals include: Improving the visual quality, environment, and safety of the area, strengthening the connection to the lakes, enhancing the natural environment, and introducing elements and themes that evoke the spirit of the Iowa Great Lakes region.
